Hearing Loss in Older Adults: What Nigerian Families Should Know

By the HearMax Centre team

In many Nigerian families, hearing loss in an older parent or grandparent is treated as something normal to be endured: "it's his age", "grandchildren must just shout", "he doesn't want devices". None of it is cruel — it is simply out of date.

Here is what current hearing care actually looks like for older adults.

Age-related hearing change is common — treatable is the point

Hearing does change with age. What is changing is the ear's ability to pick up sound, often starting with the high-pitched consonants that make speech crisp — so speech sounds present but unclear: people seem to mumble, women's and children's voices get harder, "s" and "f" disappear.

Common signs in older adults:

  • Saying "eh?" or "sorry?" constantly
  • Television volume rising steadily
  • Missing the phone or doorbell
  • Difficulty in group conversations and on the phone
  • Withdrawing from church, meetings and family events
  • Appearing forgetful or disengaged — sometimes the first thing families notice

That last point deserves emphasis: what looks like cognitive decline is often just missing half the conversation. Untreated hearing loss is linked to fatigue, anxiety and social withdrawal.

What families should actually do

1. Test annually. The recommendation for adults over 60 is a hearing test every year — so any change is tracked early while it is small and manageable.

2. Rule out the fixable. Wax blockage, medication effects and treatable medical conditions are checked before anything else. Sometimes a simple clean-out restores clarity.

3. If amplification is recommended, treat it as normal. Modern hearing aids are sleek, rechargeable and often Bluetooth-enabled — a different world from what families remember. Rehearse support, not objections.

4. Support the adjustment. A new user's brain needs weeks to relearn filtering sound. Patience, practice and follow-up fittings make the difference between an aid in a drawer and an aid in the ear.

5. Keep the environment on their side. Reduce background noise during conversations, face the person when talking, involve them in family discussions instead of speaking around them.

The cost conversation

Hearing aids at HearMax Centre start from ₦150,000, with prices varying by technology and individual hearing needs — and pocket-friendly payment plans are available. Every hearing aid purchase includes complimentary annual hearing tests for the lifetime of the device, subject to our service terms. Cost should not be the reason a grandparent misses the family for another five years.

The Nigerian reality

Family is central to how we age well. An older adult who can follow the conversation at the table, hear the prayer, and take the call from abroad stays part of the family instead of on the edge of it. That is what hearing care protects — not a number on a chart.
